I had a nasty scare today after rebooting a Small Business Server 2008 Premium box for a client of mine. At some point during the migration I was annoyed with seeing the IPv6 addresses in a number of the logs I was looking at so I just went ahead and removed IPv6 from the networking properties. After rebooting the server a few days later to finish the cleanup of the old domain controller the server didn’t come back up correctly. It sat at “Applying computer settings..” for at least 30 minutes (I didn’t wait any longer) and didn’t start all of the services. I was able to get into the event log from a remote server and saw a lot of complaining about mad.exe not finding the right topology. I figured removing Exchange 2003 and demoting the original SBS 2003 server hosed me. After a quick google search (honestly, how did I work before google?) I found a bunch of articles that talk about the problems with just disabling IPv6:
Issues Adter Disabling IPv6 in SBS 2008 (technet)
After booing into safe mode and enabling IPv6 the server came right up and I was able to stop sweating and go to bed. I’m just going to leave that on for now.. :)
