I added Bluetooth to my G5 today

I ordered the internal bluetooth module for my G5 the other day. If you’re looking to do this give Phil over at Mac Pro a call. The module showed up in about two days and took about 5 minutes to install. The rumor is that the D-Link USB module is the same thing, but I wanted the internal module so I could use the USB port on my Cinema Display for other stuff. Many thanks to the guy who wrote these excellent installation instructions .

Girls, it is time to cheer! No more squatting!

While I find this slightly distrubing maybe some of the women who read this blog (are there any?) could weigh in on how they feel about this. There is a story today on Popgadget about the designer Isabelle Lejin who has designed a stand up urinal for women called PlasGoot. Now women everywhere can enjoy standing in the puddle of urine below a urinal while smoking a butt and taking a leak. Enjoy ladies!

How not to start your morning

I had a great start this morning. When pulling out of my driveway I had to swerve to avoid someone coming down my street. The swerve was a little too agressive for an ice covered road and I ended up in my neighbors lawn. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem but my front right tire went over a rock and stayed up in the air. I couldn’t get any traction and needed to be winched out. Now the alignment is screwed up. Good Times.

Installed Unslung 2.12-Beta

I picked up a LinkSYS NSLU2 about two weeks ago. This little box is a steal for about $80.00 and is basically used as a fileserver for USB drives. The cool part of the box is that it runs a linux implementation and can be easily “modified” to do some cool things. After unboxing the NSLU2 the first thing I did was install the UnSlung 2.12 firmware .

 Server Name: fileservah
 Version: V2.3R25-uNSLUng-standard-2.12-beta
 IP Address: 192.168.1.77
 Disk 1: Ready, 115229MB (96% Free)
 Disk 2/Flash: Not Installed

The setup is fairly easy and all you have to do is follow the readme that comes with the firmware image. Check it out! I’ll keep track of modifications and/or cool stuff I do with it in this catagory.

So, the first things I installed were:

  • busybox 1.00-3
  • dropbear-0.44test4-1
  • rsync_2.6.3-3 – This crapped out:

    # ipkg install rsync
Package rsync (2.6.3-3) installed in root is up to date.
    Configuring rsync
    /opt/bin/rsync: 1: Syntax error: “(” unexpected
    postinst script returned status 2
    ERROR: rsync.postinst returned 2

    I’ll look into that later.

  • ntp 4.2.0-1

I’m kind of annoyed about the rsync problem because I want to use this as a backup for a few of my machines. I’m going to look into getting AppleTalk working now that I have three Macs in the house.

Merry Christmas

Screw the political correctness of “Happy Holidays”. I’m going right out there and wishing you a Merry Christmas. Everyone just needs to mellow out a little and stop getting offended by Christmas or other popular holidays. If someone came up to me and said Happy (insert some holiday other than Christmas) I wouldn’t be offended. This just doesn’t offend me. The fact of the matter is that a vast majority of the people in this country celebrate Christmas. And I don’t understand the reasoning behind making something that is the majority evil because it may or may not offend a small number of people who aren’t into it. Welcome to the United States of America. It’s my right to offend or not offend whomever I want.

Screw you guys, I’m waiting for Santa.

Censored by the PTO

Mediaweek reported yesterday on the dramatic rise in complaints to the FCC this year compared to last. According to Chairman of the FCC, Michael Powell, the number of complaints has increased from 14,000 in 2002 to more than 240,000 in 2003. Powell said during his appearance in front of congress that, a dramatic rise in public concern and outrage about what is being broadcast into their homes. What Powell didn’t mention is that roughly 99.8% of all of the complaints come from the Parents Television Council. The Mediaweek article goes on to discuss the insane level of censorship the FCC is now imposing on America based on form letters generated from the PTO. An excellent example of this is the case against Fox’s Married by America show. The FCC acknowledges 34 complaints where all but 4 were identical and only 1 had professed to of watched the show. When these numbers are matched against the estimated 5,100,000 viewers this hardly seems a case of “community standards being violated”. Until the FCC makes the rules clear, groups like the PTO are apparently going to be able to dictate what we can see on television and hear on the radio. Anyway, the article is an excellent read and does a better job of showing how ridiculous this all is than I ever could.

Gentoo Is Awesome

I’ve known people that have been using Gentoo for awhile but I never decided to try it. While working with Microsoft’s Virtual Server 2005 it was listed as one of the better supported unsupported operating systems so I decided to give it a shot. After setting up the base system in Virtual Server 2005 I think I’m a convert. The way it handles packages and the installation, while much more cumbersome than a RedHat install, is definitely the better install for the power user. I was always annoyed with RedHat and the installer because packages were getting installed that I didn’t select or need. The CUPS package is an example that comes to mind that is installed every time even when I know I didn’t select it. Anyway, to install Gentoo in Virtual Server was as easy as following these steps with the Universal LiveCD. I highly recommend you give it a shot if you’re looking for a Linux Distrobution that leaves a lot of the decisions to the user.
