After spending most of last weekend working on my Wi-Fi detection projects I figured it was time to clean up my desk today. I got sidetracked halfway through.. so now only the left half is clean. I’ll get to the right side at some point. I would take a picture to show you, but my half assed cleaning isn’t very impressive.

I’ve been using a combination of KisMAC on OS X and KisMET on Linux to poke around. The interface to KisMAC is excellent. Here’s a screenshot of it spending sometime looking for networks from my house.

I got an Orinoco Card with extneral antenna on Satuday that I had ordered off Ebay. I tried using it briefly but it hosed up my laptop. Turns out I had to repatch the orinoco.c and orinoco_cs.c drivers for my kernel and load them in. I’ve been thinking that I should add commands to this blog so I can remember what I did when I come across it again. So boring for everyone though.. so I’ll decide on that another time.

My next investment will be a GPS that can hook into the computer so I can load the data into a mapping program and publish the open spots in the area. I know you’re thinking “why?”; and honestly, I have no idea. I’ve always been fascinated by over the air communications, from RC Cars to CB Radios, it’s something that I enjoy. I’ve been thinking that on my road trips this summer I may bring my stuff.. I’m also interested in these WiFi Mesh networks that have been popping up. I’ll post more on those another time and what I might do to get into that (like you care).
